Rita McCarthy will give the next talk in the Old Kilfarboy Society Winter series on Tuesday, 10 November at 8pm in the usual venue of the Malbay, Miltown Malbay. The subject of the talk is ‘Scattery: Island of Saints and Sinners’. Barely 100 acres in size, Scattery Island has witnessed and been part of the changing times of our country. Today it is a place of peace and tranquility, but that belies its tempestuous past. It was once a place of saints and Vikings, invasion and shipwrecks, prosperity, peace and ultimate abandonment. .Invaded by Brian Boru, it can also boast a King of Munster as one of its abbots. Saint Senan, Ivar the Viking King of Limerick, the Spanish Armada and British forces have all played key roles in the Island’s history.
